You're a new engineering manager with six months, a team of engineers and a manager who wants results. Keep your manager happy, keep your team from quitting, ship your milestones and grow your people. Oh, and at some point the CEO is going to discover AI.

Every day You get 4 hours. Your 1:1s take some. The rest goes on coaching, pairing, status updates and putting out fires.

You can't see everything. What you know about people fades after each 1:1. The board flatters some people and hides others.

Every 60 days It's calibration. Rate fairly, fight for promotions, and live with the consequences.

Then AI shows up. Output goes up. So do review load and bugs. How much does it really help? You'll find out at the end.
